UV Resin Rainbow Tutorials – Making Resin Jewellery. Making breastmilk, hair, ashes or umbilical cord stones in a mould or poured straight into a setting (direct pour or filling). Keepsake jewellery making using a mould to make a cabochon stone technique, or straight into a silver bezel cup. I’m using our solid silver necklace settings today. This technique works for a ring too, but in a smaller space you might need to cut down on colours!
Rainbow Colours
A traditional rainbow is red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet. I like to end with purple and pink, as well as adding aqua and teal in between green and blue. Sometimes you might just want to use a section of the rainbow such as orange-honey-yellow-lime-green. In the first tutorial video I suggested the client might like petrol colour scheme with purple-blue-teal colours. You can do the colours in any order you like
Rubover Stone
Some settings are great for rubbing over a stone, especially the crown point settings which are easy to use and each come with a single mould, so you can make a couple of cabochons then choose your favourite to set in the setting. Crown points bend easily into place, even with a teaspoon, and if you mess up a stone, you can make another one. If you’re making a piece for a client, you can linksell the extra stones as jewellery pieces*
Direct Pour/Filling
Direct pour settings need to be filled with resin directly into the necklace. Some might be a bit easier to do than using a mould, some people prefer the setting style/aesthetic of a simple bezel cup, and some people like the look of the shiny domed top on a filled piece. Personally I always find direct pours a bit nerve-wracking, even after almost a decade teaching keepsake resin jewellery making. Even if you’re experienced, something might go wrong in the pour (my advanced courses have some work-arounds if they do). In general, if I’m making a direct pour for a client I will do a practice setting first to check they are happy with colours and placement etc. The direct pour kits come with a stainless steel practice setting.**
You’ll find more info on making pieces with stones and direct pours in our Advanced Breastmilk Jewellery Course and Advanced Memorial Jewellery Course. I’ve also created two free courses to help people learn how to make breastmilk and memorial jewellery – click here to register and take them! If you don’t have time then here is a quick bit of info on the two techniques. Please watch tutorials if you are new to keepsake jewellery making to find out which one fits your needs.

*on upselling stones – please make it clear to the client you’ll always return the spare stones free of charge, regardless of their decision. I feel that these belong to the client and it’s unethical to charge someone extra to get back their loved ones’ ashes. Blog here on upselling and linkselling! – Nikki
**personally, I like to make the practice setting in a 6mm round bezel cup setting so it’s real silver. I tell the client it’s a free gift but also have ways to linksell here, see the following blog 🙂
