Soldering a Teardrop Ring Video
Here is the full blog for the Soldering a Teardrop Ring tutorial with all the supplies I used in the video.
The tumbling unit is made up of an acrylic bowl containing small pins, underneath the bowl powerful magnets which spin around at 2000RPM pulling the pins around. It can work in two directions but I usually just do 25 minutes “forward”, with the switch up for single direction. The pins create a satin texture on your metal, which I find very forgiving because it covers small imperfections and scratches etc. If you’d prefer a shiny finish then you can polish the pieces with a polishing mop and compound afterwards then clean in the ultrasonic.
If we’re able to, we’ll send some polishing compound too but we can’t guarantee it due to restrictions on sending liquid. You can use a small drop of washing up liquid (Fairy, dish soap, Dawn etc). The box is massive and weighs over 10kg, the machine casing is stainless steel and I’ve had mine since 2020 and it’s been an absolute game changer. I couldn’t imagine having to go back to polishing by hand so if you’re making jewellery I 100% recommend one of these. It’s perfect for reaching in small gaps and polishing complex designs and uneven surfaces and you can polish dozens of pieces at once.
Precious Metal and Stones
It works by removing the top layer of metal and evens things out. If you’re tumbling gold and other expensive precious metals like platinum I recommend you do a five minute cycle and check, repeating until you have the desired result so as not to remove too much gold. The manufacturers recommend this machine can be used with certain precious stones such as cz, ruby, sapphire and diamond but please proceed with caution and test a small area of the stone first.
It has a 1500g capacity and a bucket 108*185mm which should be quarter filled with water, polishing pins, a little compound or dish soap and your silver. The machine is 230*230*380(mm) and I keep mine on the floor as it’s very heavy. The machine can run up to half an hour and is very very easy to use. Happy to show you on video call if you have any questions or want to see it in action.Â
Pour the water to 1 / 4 of the bowl, then put 200g steel pins and 400g jewellery, and add about 30g polishing liquid
Press the middle button to drive the tumbler. Note: tumbler has two directions
Push the button up, it is a single direction of rotation.
Push the button down, it is rotating in two directions. It rotates in one direction for about 15 minutes, and then automatically rotates to the opposite direction for 15 minutes. We suggest a two-way rotation, which is more effective
Tumbler has self-protection function. When it works for a long time, it will stop and rest. When the motor is cooled down, it will continue to work.
