How to Turn a Precious Lock of Hair into a Forever Keepsake
The Power in a Single Lock
There are so many moments in life that we wish we could just bottle up and keep forever, right? Think about that first tiny curl from your baby’s haircut, a cherished strand from a loved one, or a tuft of fur from a beloved friend as we prepare to say goodbye. A lock of hair is such a small thing, but it carries a huge, powerful memory! We get it, this isn’t just a craft project; it’s a tiny piece of history. That’s why it’s super important to make sure that your client’s lock of hair is handled correctly, from the moment they cut it to the second it’s enclosed in a precious keepsake.

The Absolute Dos and Don’ts of Cutting and Collecting
Ask your clients to send hair and give them instructions
- The Dos: Use clean, sharp scissors (so the ends aren’t frayed). Weave in and out of the hair so you’re not cutting just one area. Gather the hair gently.
- Secure the strands loosely with thread or a tiny piece of tape, not a big elastic band.
- The Don’ts: Don’t use glue, hairspray, or products before cutting. Don’t grab a huge clump—a little bit goes a long way!
They can send you a photo of the hair next to a penny for scale, so you can say “send half of that please”.

Safely Packaging Your Precious Strands
I always ask clients to send hair in a pot with their name and order number (we send them a kit on Tree of Opals) in a tiny ziplock bag or use parchment paper to keep it safe during transit. Make sure they know how VERY IMPORTANT it is to add their name and order number. We ask them to reuse the little c5 box we send the kit in, it’s like a mini pizza box, but a bubble envelope works great too. I prefer them to send Royal Mail Tracked24 which is under £4 here in the UK, then ask them to send me the tracking number which I add to my Royal Mail app and I get a notification when it’s delivered.
